Just a few words on new coffees from 49th.
49th has two new lots from Ethiopia coming to us the following week (Feb 11):
-Organic Ethiopia Yergacheffe Konga Lot #45
-Organic Ethiopia Sidamo Shoye Cooperative
We've also been blessed with some great centrals this year from 49th. In the past, we've been Africa-centric, with most of our top cupping coffees from Kenya and coffee's birthplace, Ethiopia. In particular, the Costa Rica Don Mayo 1900m, and Guatemala Los Ramas are spectacular coffees, cupping somewhere in the 87-91 range.
Don Mayo is complex, sweet and fruity, with cherry and blackberry notes throughout the cup, but with nice structure and balance. Los Ramas is one of the more unique Guatemalans, cupping extremely cleanly, with a beautiful peach/orange finish...so long as you take care when brewing to not overextract.
We've also pulled some amazing shots with the Don Mayo, which seems to like a short dose with a fine grind to great a long infusion time, but a relatively short extraction time, compared to Epic.
Speaking of which, Epic has gone back to the traditional blend from the Holiday Epic of Decemeber, but is, to our palates, producing some of the best shots we've had. The roast has been lightened slightly, giving the coffee a lot more sweetness with a touch less cocoa and more semi-sweet chocolate notes. The tangerine sweetness on the finish is a lot more clear and overall, the shot has more structure.
Lastly, we'll be releasing our first issue of our inhouse magazine, 'Museofied' soon. Our new marketing director, Stephanie Ortynsky, will be taking over the editing and production of our mini-zine (to be more apt), and I can say, the finished product should be impressive.
